The Museum's history starts from the 17th February 1973, when in the city of Alma-Ata by the Collegium of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kazakh SSR was decided to establish a Museum of the Ministry of Interior. The opening of the Museum was held on October 7, 1975.
For 30-year history, the museum has received recognition from specialists. In 1990, it was nominated as one of the best museums in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR (from 113) and is listed in the catalogue of «Museums of the USSR».
Due to the relocation of the office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from the city of Alma-Ata to the city of Akmola, by the order of the Minister of Internal Affairs of RK of April 26, 2000 No. 234 it was approved "The provision on the museums in the internal affairs authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan".
After moving to the Northern capital for the Museum of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was allocated a room with the area of 219 sq. meters. The Museum collection includes more than 4500 exhibits. There are archive documents, photo and video materials, objects of material and spiritual culture - books, souvenirs, artwork, weapons. Excursions are conducted in Kazakh, Russian and English languages.
The Museum employees are engaged in the enlargement of the collection, updating of expositions and topical scientific research. The Museum closely cooperates with educational institutions, colleges, universities, cultural centers and museums of the Capital. During the period of functioning of the Museum of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it has provided assistance in the formation and establishment of funds of the Presidential Cultural Center, the Museum of the NSC of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Veterans and law enforcement officers, members of their families, the soldiers of internal troops located in the city of Astana, schoolchildren, students and guests of the Сapital, constantly visit the museum.
